Discussion Questions

These questions are just to help get the discussion going. They do not need to be discussed in order

1. Do you ever encounter people who remind you of Jesus?

2. How do you think people at the time he was alive thought of Jesus? How do you think you’d think of him if you were alive then?

3. What does it mean for you to be human? (Are humans spiritually different from other animals?)

4. How do you think of Jesus / Who do you think he was?

5. What do you think it means to be human?

  • Are humans inherently good, evil, or neutral?

  • How do we know what is good and moral?

  • Do people need religion to know what is good and moral or can we find that out on our own?

  • Are there times when it's ok to do bad things?

6. Do you ever find it hard to relate to people who believe different things about Jesus/ do you think there are perspectives about Jesus that are wrong?

7. How do you address/conceptualize the contradiction or duality of Jesus being human and part of the holy trinity?

8. During Christmas do these kinds of thoughts and reflections come up for you? Do you have other thoughts or reflections about what you believe that you think about this time of year?

Discussion Background Materials

John 1 (NIV):

14a The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Luke 2 (NIV):

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Luke 24 (NIV):

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
