Discussion Questions

These questions are just to start and aid discussion. Please skip around in the list, indulge diversions, and let your discussion develop naturally.

More questions will be added as the event approaches.

  1. What music do you enjoy? What styles do you prefer? Have your preferences changed over time? What live music performances have you enjoyed the most?

  2. Why does music matter?

  3. How does music influence you emotionally? Can it change your mood? Has it influenced your development as a person at certain stages of your life? Have you ever sought out certain music because of its influence over you (or avoided it)?

  4. Do extremely popular musicians have too much money and power? What are your thought on musicians influencing elections? Does the existence of billionaire musicians take resources away from smaller, local artists?

  5. How do the experiences of writing music, performing it, and listening to it differ? Does writing or performing music change the way you listen to it?

  6. How have technological and marketing innovations changed music? Do you use streaming services? Do you still have physical media? Do you remember an era when even recording an entry-level album required expensive studio space? How is TikTok influencing the music industry?

The video below was filmed several years ago for the Bridgetalk program that preceded this Bridges discussion gathering. It's made up of the spontaneous responses of perfomers at a small, local music festival in Kensington and person-on-the-street interviews.
