Discussion Questions

  1. Have you encountered any recent expressions of toxic masculinity? Have you seen any coverage of this phenomenon in the news or entertainment media (for example, one of the most-watched and critically acclaimed television dramas of the past year was a show called Adolescence, that dealt with this topic).

  2. What contributes to healthy masculinity and femininity? Who are your gender role models? Has your experience of gender norms been rigidly defined or open? How have gender norms changed in your lifetime?

  3. Is toxic masculinity more prevalent in some communities than others? What causes this? How can we deal with toxic behaviour in online platforms? What do you think of Australia's recent law limiting social media access for children under the age of 16?

  4. Why do some people react so strongly against the Trans community? How can we build a society that supports people with differing gender identities?

  5. What do you think will result from the UCP's introduction of Bill 13? (Bill 13 limits the ability of professional associations to govern the behaviour of their members. It has been dubbed "The Peterson Law" by Daniel Smith in reference to Jordan Peterson being required by the College of Psychologists of Ontario to complete a "program on professionalism in public statements," after their finding that some of his social media posts and public comments on gender identity, politicians, and women were "degrading," "demeaning," and "unprofessional," posing a "moderate risk of harm to the public").
