Brunch Discussion

  1. Have you ever approached challenging spiritual ideas like the incarnation or resurrection via simpler, popular stories and modern myths  (like Superman comics/movies, Narnia books, Star Wars narratives, etc.)? What stories have been the most meaningful to you? What spiritual themes do they engage?

  2. Two Gospels have nativity narratives (Matthew, Luke), two don't (Mark, John). Have you ever examined and contrasted these four stories and the difference between where the authors begin them?

  3. Nativity narratives frequently collapse the events the Bible indicates took place over months or even as long as a couple of years into a single night (pulling the Magi into the stable with the Shepards). Do these abridgements impact the themes presented in the gospel stories? Does the way that nativity plays, creches, and other depictions capture key themes without being narratively correct help you approach the Bible, and the idea of the incarnation, as a story conveyed to us by other humans and their narrative limitations?

Background Materials

As a companion to the video above, here are several clips from the most messianic of the various film depictions of Superman, Superman Returns (2006). The titles indicate the loose narrative points in the gospels that the film references. There are other plot lines not captured in full here (a loosely Mary Magdalene-centred narrative for instance). All but the first clip will spoil your viewing of the full movie, which can currently be watched under a 7 day free trial of the Starz channel, within a variety of streaming platform's add-on channels.
