Brunch Discussion

  1. Have you ever approached challenging spiritual ideas like the incarnation or resurrection via simpler, popular stories (like Superman comics/movies, Narnia books, etc.)? What stories have been the most meaningful to you?

  2. Two Gospels have nativity narratives (Matthew, Luke), two don't (Mark, John). Have you ever examined and contrasted these four stories and the difference between where the authors begin them?

  3. Nativity narratives frequently collapse the events of a couple of years into a single night (pulling the Magi into the stable with the Shepards). Do these abridgements impact the themes presented in the gospel stories?

Question editing and adding will continue as the event approaches.

Background Materials

As a companion to the video above, here are several clips from the most messianic of the various film depictions of Superman, Superman Returns (2006). The titles indicate the loose narrative points in the gospels that the film references. All but the first clip will spoil your viewing of the full movie, which can currently be watched under a 7 day free trial of the Starz channel, within a variety of streaming platform's add-on channels.
