Discussion

  1. Please share questions, comments, and affirmations extending from what Mike shared with us.

  2. Have you ever thought of the stories you tell yourself having positive and negative influence over you? What about the stories you tell others, the stories you consume for entertainment and the family and friend shared narratives you hold onto?

  3. Have you ever thought about how the books, films, tv shows, and other narratives you've engaged have shaped your worldview?

  4. How do you feel about the assertion that “stories are not anodyne*?” What about the even harsher title of the book linked below (Stories Are Weapons)?

  5. Truth and Reconciliation Day is September 30. Do you think the stories of indigenous Canadians are beginning to gain more widespread understanding after many years of being suppressed and silenced by colonizing Canadians?

  6. There are (or were) official historians and storytellers in most cultures, and some persist to this day. Are you familiar with the role of knowledge keepers in indigenous cultures? Are you familiar with these sorts of roles in your own cultural heritage (In the early Celtic church the storyteller was called a seanchaí)? Have we allowed billionaires who own social media algorithms to become the new knowledge keepers of our collective culture? If so, how do we take this role away from them?

*Anodyne definition: not likely to offend or arouse tensions: Innoculous. (Merriam-Webster)
