Discussion Questions

These questions are just to help get the discussion going. They do not need to be discussed in order and conversation outside of the bounds of these questions is welcome.

  1. Do you tend to think of morality in religious terms, cultural terms, family norms, political affiliations, or shaped by other influences?

  2. Who are the moral philosophers or teachers that you most respect? Are there people defining morality that you take issue with?

  3. How necessary is morality to society, family, and health?

  4. Have you ever deconstructed your moral worldview? Have you ever changed moral frameworks?

  5. Have you ever influenced the morality of other people (as a parent, a group leader, a religious influencer, an opinion leader or via other roles)?

  6. Did you read the short excerpt linked, or the entire book below this summer? What are your thoughts on what you read? Did you know "moral psychology" or "evolutionary psychology" were academic disciplines before reading this?

  7. Are you aware of the Alberta UCP government's new opt-in only rules around sexual education in all schools or their removal of all books with any mention of sexuality from school libraries? Why do conservatives frequently restrict access to information as means of exerting moral control? Does this approach achieve their goals or work against them? Why is there a left-right split on many moral principles? Why are moral principles commonly emphasized on the left, like anti-racism, anti-sexism, consent, equity, and tolerance not accepted as morally important on the right?

  8. Do you have any thoughts on the "Moral Monday" article linked below?

  9. Are the moral principles exposed in the Isaiah scripture below ones you associate with Judeo-Christian religion, based on the messaging and behaviour of the adherents you encounter personally or via various media formats?

Isaiah 58: 6 Is not this the fast that I choose:
   to loose the bonds of injustice,
   to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
   and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
   and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them
   and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
8 Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
   and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you;
   the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
   you shall cry for help, and he will say, “Here I am.”

If you remove the yoke from among you,
   the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
10 if you offer your food to the hungry
   and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
   and your gloom be like the noonday.
11 The Lord will guide you continually
   and satisfy your needs in parched places
   and make your bones strong,
and you shall be like a watered garden,
   like a spring of water
   whose waters never fail.
12 Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
   you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
   the restorer of streets to live in.
