Discussion Questions

These questions are just to help get the discussion going. They do not need to be discussed in order and conversation outside of the bounds of these questions is welcome.

  1. Have you ever tried to articulate your spiritual identity?

  2. What titles, apart from the titles of actual religions, would you use to describe your sense of spiritual identity (Ex. person of faith, sceptic, mystic, spiritual person, religious person, journeyer, non-practicing, devout, deconstructionist etc.)?

  3. Are there aspects of your spiritual identity that have changed over the years? Has anything stayed the same?

  4. Have you participated in any identity-affirming rituals? (Naming ceremony, tattooing, baptism, confirmation, catechism, family spiritual traditions, etc.)

  5. Do you participate in any regular practices that could be considered spiritual? (Meditation, prayer, communion, affirmations, reading of scriptures or other religious materials, discussion of spiritual ideas, candle or incense lighting, yoga, visiting sacred spaces, etc.)

  6. Different streams of Christianity emphasize sometimes contradictory ideas around identity. Have you encountered any of these (Ex. being "made in the image of God" vs being "born into original sin")?

  7. Do you tend to approach God as transcendent or imminent, relational and companionable or unknowable? How does this influence your sense of spiritual identity? The video below presents spiritual ideas that align with the transcendence of God. What did you think of these ideas in contrast to picturing God as more imminent?

  8. Question from the video below: "Who are you? What makes you, you?"

  9. What do you think of the ideas in the video below? What do you agree with? What do you disagree with? What do you think of the definition of god, self, the universe, and other concepts that the speaker argues for? How do these contrast with other spiritual thinkers definitions?
