Discussion Questions
These questions are just to help get the discussion going. They do not need to be discussed in order and conversation outside of the bounds of these questions is welcome.
-
When you've had to concisely present yourself to other people, what have you said or written? (Ex: introducing yourself to new people at a social gathering, writing a speaker's, author's, or academic biography, reconnecting with someone you haven't seen since childhood etc). How do the things you say in these situations line up with your internal sense of identity?
-
Do you tend to think about personal identity psychologically (see the TIPI below), philosophically (see the video below), relationally, spiritually, or do other ways of thinking define your personal identity?
-
Have you ever looked back on the past and felt like you were a very different person then?
-
How much do the roles you take on (relationally, professionally, academically, culturally) contribute to your personal sense of identity?
-
Did your results from the TIPI below, and their comparison to the population as a whole seem relevant to your own internal sense of identity? Did you do any further reading on the TIPI or "the big five" personality traits? Have you used other personality inventories in the past? Were they meaningful to you?
-
Is your sense of identity now different than at other times in your life? What caused these changes? What contributed to unchanging aspects of your identity? Were times of shifting identity difficult for you? Has your sense of identity been significantly changing recently?
-
What social institutions and cultural factors influence you the most?
-
Psychologists, philosophers, friends, relatives, religious leaders, affinity groups, political camps, and many others all engage identity. Which of these (or other's not listed) have the most influence over your sense of self?
-
If you are a person of faith, what do religious traditions, scriptural teachings, meditative practices and/or personal spiritual experiences have to do with your personal identity?

Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI)
It should only take you a couple of minutes or less to take this test. The TIPI has been extensively researched, and, within the limits of its brevity and simplicity, correlates with the results of more involved personality testing. Several popular personality inventories are owned by corporations and not subject to outside study (ex: Myers Briggs) or are somewhat pseudoscientific (Enneagram) making it hard to find objective research on their efficacy. You'll find a huge amount of material online that defines and engages the personality traits in the TIPI. When looking for interpretive materials, please note that some versions of the TIPI differ slightly in the terms used for the "big five" personality traits, but they are referring to the same concepts.
